How did you do?

I didn’t do a lot of reading last year. I was too busy writing, and most of my reading was from 2006 catch up but as I was looking over AAR polls, I was struck by a feeling of loneliness. A couple of the series just didn’t attract me the way I wanted them too and I couldn’t get into them. Some of the books I thought were super, weren’t on the list. And a couple of my “Goals” didn’t happen damn

So, folks, what were you’re reading related meant to’s last year. Did you make them or not? Here were mine.

I felt left out not glomming the brotherhood so I was determined to try the series again a couple books in. Didn’t because of the furor when LU came out. Just didn’t seem “The one” to hook me. Maybe I’ll start the series with the next one.

I wanted to catch up with the Singh series. Did. Loved the second book. Waiting on the upcoming.

Wanted to stay caught up on Liu. I’m a book behind, but I have it.

I have collected all of Christine Warren’s books. Was determined to find the time to sit down and read them back to back. A special treat to myself as I rarely get to do that. chili Still have not found the time. Am still saving the books and adding to the pile as the series comes out. I might be missing one. I think she released one in an anthology? (putting find that out onto the to do list)

Wanted to promote the Bronze Horseman. Loved that book. Uhm, forgot to do that.

Wanted to rebuild my keeper shelf of the books I lost years ago. (This is a loooong time item on the to do list.) I did start that. Refilled my Sharon and Tom Curtis inventory. Some of the older Liinda Howards. A couple Garwoods. The Sandra Canfield book Night into day. Still working on the list though.

Wanted to delve a bit deeper into the Urban Fantasy phenom, because pretty much, I don’t have any on my TBB or TBR list. Hmm, did you know they are mostly in first preson? Well, I didn’t which explains why I don’t have a huge TBR backlist of them. Just don’t enjoy that POV. I know, not realizing they are mostly first person qualifies as a DUH! moment, but I’ve been a bit distracted. At least I now understand why I don’t have a any in my pile despite KNOWING I’ve looked into tons. So, does that mean I can check that off or have to keep it on?

Wanted to start a new list for 2008 before 2008 got here so I could participate in the what are you waiting for discussions. Didn’t. Have absolutely no idea what’s coming out this year beyond Maureen McKade’s Reason to Sin. Must move that up on the to do list otherwise I’m going to get behind.

Wanted to get through my recommended list collected over the year to see if I want to buy or not.. Haven’t but I still have the list (It’s a piece of paper in my purse so that’s a big yeah!) and I did order one. Second Time Around by Marie Ferriella. Waiting for it to arrive.

So, there’s my list. And I haven’t even started one for 2008. *sigh* Are you all doing better than I am?

  1. Reading your post I smiled because it reads pretty much the same as me for 2007. Started out with great optimism and a determination to get out of my rut and try a few new to me authors. Sadly, real life got in the way and my muse ran off somewhere! Despite putting up posters it still hasn’t returned.

Kept up with the Brotherhood, although the last one was sooo diappointing the series is currently in the last chance saloon with the next one for me.

Did read and thoroughly enjoy Maureen McKade’s Reason To Live and also really enjoyed Donna Macmean’s The Education Of Mrs Brimley. Elizabeth Hoyt’s first two were good reads as well.

Have Meljean Brooks urban fantasy book to start but haven’t got to it yet.

There were a couple of auto buy authors I kept up with - Nora Roberts and Sarah McCarty’s Caine’s Reckoning dance1 but all in all it was a pretty lacklustre year for me on the reading front. Here’s hoping 2008 will be better.

  2. I already have a list for 2008, even before the year had started! LOL
But doing the polls over at AAR for the best of 2007 was so hard!! Took me a good hour to pick.
Even though I did put Caine’s Reckoning under most luscious romance. Bath scene rub a dub dub :)

  3. Hi Sarah…. and just for the record I swear I am not stalking angel1

2007 for me was a tremendous let down on my “must” have authors. It was a year of the WTF????

I was in a big reading rut and decided to buy author’s that I had never read. I am so happy I did, I read some pretty amazing books but pretty fantastic author’s that reminded me why I love to read in the first place.

Jaci Burton, Shannon McKenna, Sunny, Rachel Vincent, Meljean Brook, Joey W Hill and the ever wonderful Sarah McCarty that totally rocked my book reading world!

I am hoping that some series that are out right now and have been a bit stale or maybe a bit cracked out….will find themselves again because I do love those authors! So here is hoping for a better 2008 and Sam’s Creed!

  4. I must admit I too struggled with 2007 reading lists, not too much grabbed me, and read some atrocious (sp?) ebooks..

Though did stumble across a short story by Singh, I think it is a prequel to her series.. so now desperately chasing all of those so I can sit and read them in a row..

Actually, I think I had the most luck with finding older books this year and reading those. Went through a Hannah Howell phase which was fun.

I think some of what the series that used to be on my must have now lists, I now just buy out of habit more than anything else and it takes me forever to get to them..

Here’s hoping this year is a much better one, am definitely looking forward to some more McCarty releases! chili

  5. Willa- I hate “down” reading years. I admit I’m a very picky reader. I need to be grabbed by the characters from the get go or I don’t bother and I do not enjoy first person at all. Despite all that, though, I normally find tons of books to read. However, likely due to my work load, last year was not a huge success for me. Hoping 2008 will be better!

  6. Katie,

You are so organized. gogirl I’m jealous. I’m hoping this year to keep an on going file on my computer for what I’ve read with thoughts. We’ll see. I may or may not succeed. It would make end of the year lists so much easier!!

  7. Samantha,

I think this was a transition year for a lot of readers. 2006 was my clean-out-I-give-up year. hugme

I tried a ton of new authors but I wasn’t smart about it. Pretty much, if anyone recommended it, I bought it. Didn’t take my personal tastes into account and well, I had a huge DNF pile. It did convince me however, that I’m not ever going to be a fan of first person. I was like that with math too. Took advanced math well into college convinced at some point it was going to get easier. madness Uhm, it doesn’t.

  8. Edie,

I do find myself rereading on slow years and revisiting old recommendations.

What was the short story of Singh’s? I don’t think I’ve read it.

  9. Had a question: what is the Brotherhood series mentioned by you and Willa? Who is the author and what is it about?

    by Z on February 3rd, 2008 at 4:23 pm

  10. Hi Z

JR Ward’s big series. Can’t remember specifics, but all the titles have Lover in the title, I believe.

  11. Sarah ~ I think that short story for Nalini is Enchanted Season and its the back story for Tamsyn and Nate. I just picked up Mine to Possess.

Z ~ JR Ward series is about a brotherhood of XXL Vampire Warriors fighting the big bad Lessers. Dark Lover, Lover Eternal, Lover Awakened, Lover Revealed and Lover Unbound. IMO and only my opinion DL, LE and LA were really good around LR it started to get a bit cracked out dunno2

But you know what they say about opinions……lol
